Discuss: Community Announcements

Discussion in 'Offtopic' started by Pythros, Nov 8, 2011.

  1. All content in the Community Announcements forum can be discussed here. Please STAY ON TOPIC. Thank you.

Edit: This isn't the place to apply or say "I can do this" or "I have this" etc. We will post/update the announcement with the information when we are ready.
  2. So, I have a lot of free time on my hands usually, but what kind of expertise must you have for the wiki pages? I would love to help keep them up and updated, but I'm not sure if I am qualified.

So, getting a new donation button? Cool!
Please, don't be offended if I don't donate for awhile, as money is a little tight (guess why I have so much free time?)
  3. I'll help keep the wiki up to date!

I know the vast majority of all Civilian commands and a few mod/admin commands as well!
  4. I would love to donate... but I'm 15 so it has to go through my parents...

I would prefer that you have:

    1. A flawless grasp of the English language, its grammar and syntax.
    2. Ability to convey information in an organized, expressive, and clear format.
    3. Knowledge of basic wiki markup.

I would personally stress the first point, because otherwise I'm going to have to go through and proofread every page. Even if formatting sucks, the key to looking professional in anything you do lies in having good language skills, written and/or spoken.
  6. *ahem* I pride myself on taking after Phrixos (PRaeburn, friend IRL) on the grammar issue.

Lol, I almost misspelled "grammar". Near fail.
  7. We will have alternate ways for you to donate. One such way is to go the forums using http://frm.px-e.net instead of the current method you use now.

Also, this isn't the place to apply or say "I can do this" or "I have this" etc. We will post/update the announcement with the information when we are ready.

Auhjos, please read what pythros just said. This isn't the place to post applications.
  9. My 2 cents:

Sounds like these various positions could be filled by the admins themselves and not separate entities. This much stratification of the moderation structure seems both flimsy and cumbersome. Am I seeing this the wrong way?

Also a quick question, is there currently a wiki for this server? (edit: Because I currently see no real information at the link)
  10. I think I counted about five or six different pages on there. So, yes, there is a wiki, just not a really big one.

I kind of think of it as a "give the masses something important to do" thing. Let them do their part to help the server. Having mods do it doesn't quite hit all the talent pool, either.

If you consider admins to be me and pythros; pythros is fairly busy on a regular basis with maintaining the server and all the little chores that come with it. As for me, at this point I'm basically just IT/sysadmin for the server until we go live and/or I finish MCTowns and/or I'm on break (I'm also a college student.)

If you extend "admin" to be the rest of the staff, none of them seem to want to do it.

So we're looking for someone who does.

All 6 of those pages were written by me in one sitting from 1-4 AM on some night during the last week or so of summer. I think that's the only time anyone's worked on it.
  13. All staff members. From my fairly extensive experience with online communities, these sort of jobs are usually the staff's duties. That's the way things seem to work. I'm confused by the designation of non-staff individuals to trust-heavy tasks like web development, (though I'm sure no one will be getting direct FTP access...).

Not to be rude, but shouldn't someone designated as "staff" have a little more to do with the inner workings of the ChiRho community other than to effectively just be "babysitters?" From what you've said it sounds like most, if not all of the nitty gritty is done by only a very small group of the team.

I understand that this is just a way to look for a little helpful input, but honestly I just predict a bunch of:

"So I took this comp sci. class back in 7th grade and I can make text change colors with CSS. Does that mean I'm in?"
*Viper predicts you won't find many MySQL/PHP gurus :p

I guess what I'm trying to say is that creating specific tasks doesn't necessarily produce specific results; it'll just make people think they have a shot at getting some sort of special title.

I am aware the chances of people fitting the requirements and being willing to help are rather slim. But "slim" is better than the "not happening" which is what we would be at without posting requests for these positions.

Because most of the "nitty-gritty" is work that needs to be done over SSH and involves being familiar with *nix-like OS's. Everything else is stuff like moderating the server (check, got that covered) and writing things like the wiki, making the front page, etc. And just because someone's not in-game staff doesn't mean they're not part of the team.

And, actually, if someone took one CS class in high school in a C++-like language, that would probably suffice to make it onto the dev team. I'm just looking for someone to help me find bugs, document code, and do the annoying-but-important things like writing up the CLI. Yeah it'd be nice if they knew a bit more so they could actually help me implement things, but hey. Code monkies are still coders.

It would be sftp, over SSH if they got it. And I assume the task would just be writing the pages, then sending the source to pythros who would do the magic that makes it end up on the internet.
  15. Any one is welcome to apply whether they are current staff or not. For those who are not currently server moderating staff and get the spot, they will get the Specialist title/rank to stand out as PXE Community staff. However, this does not grant them much outside of a few tp abilities and promote people as needed.

The purpose of posting these positions is to spread out responsibilities so that they all don't fall on a few individuals where they also need to moderate the server. This can burn out people and can become overwhelm with responsibilities.

Just because someone is currently staff, doesn't mean they automatically get the other job. All applicants are treated the same with the exception of those we have had problems with following rules on the server over and over.

No, someone isn't going to get direct FTP for the web admin job or anything of the such unless I can trust them personally and/or there is a way to severely restrict access to only to do what their responsibilities entail.
  16. Where do i apply for a staff position. The staff position i want apply for is redstone engineering and building designer.
  17. I am not super knowledgeable about redstone (only know the basics), but I do have some skill when it comes to designing buildings. I've never edited a wiki page before, but I do have pretty fair knowledge of minecraft, or I can help spellcheck for mistakes. I would enjoy helping out on this server if it is needed. :)
  18. Basicaly im in the same state of ember but i know a bit more about redstone if you ever need anything just ask ;)
